A River Winds Through It.
Population: 1,150 • Sq. Miles: 1.98
Located between Duncans Mills and Guerneville, the Russian River flows east to west through Monte Rio’s two square miles.
As with nearby Sonoma County towns, this one originated as a railroad stop, as a redwood sawmill, but later became a “Vacation Wonderland” for summer cabins after Mark Twain reportedly wrote, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco”.
Northwood Golf Club offers a highly ranked and unique course among towering redwood trees, while the famed private S.F. gentlemen’s meeting retreat, the Bohemian Club, is also located here.
About 1,200 people now call Monte Rio home, and there are many options if you’re seeking a rustic town with some acreage.
