Just 15 minutes west of Santa Rosa, you’ll find Sebastopol, another quaint central Sonoma County town. After growing as a small farmers’ trade center in the 1850s, it was once known as the “Gravenstein Apple Capital of the World” and for its plum crops. Now, it’s renowned for wine grapes and vineyards, as well as being a “Nuclear Free Zone”.
The annual Gravenstein Apple Fair is still honored annually. But over 30 tasting rooms and wineries, lots of unique shops, the huge freshwater Laguna Wetlands Preserve, and farm-to-table restaurants have added sophistication to Sebastopol as a destination and a great place to live off the beaten track.
